The climax of the festival starts at midnight exactly when two small wooden sticks called Shingi are released from a local temple. Just then the crowd goes wild in search of one of the sticks. Meanwhile the men throw buckets of water at each other as a symbol of ritual purification of body and soul, a tradition that has existed for several centuries.
