Toji temple means of this and has many long story. Kyoto religious foundations were laid here, and saved the city where Buddha that Kukai founded the temple in 796. Kukai Toji turned into the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism. Esoteric rituals of the sect relied heavily on mandalas. The Kodo, there are 21 statues that make up a three-dimensional mandala in the center of which is Daiichinorai, the cosmic Buddha who first enunciated the esoteric teachings. Each of these and other images of some 1,200 years old are carved from a single block of wood.
The great pagoda of Toji masalta wood structure of Japan – 55m – and a symbol of Kyoto, was built in 1644. Inside lie the images of Buddhas and four in a row.
Kukai’s death marks the IUD 21 of each month in the enclosure with a market that the locals called Kobo-san. Many guests spend some time to make a short pilgrimage to Miei-do where they make offerings of money and incense.
